This particular nasty trojan has been making the rounds among folks I know, and when researching remedies I found that a lot who’ve gotten it just wind up crying “Uncle”, reformatting and reinstalling Windows.
There’s another way that isn’t so drastic, and if by posting this I save even one person from that heart-and-headache, well, It’ll have been a New Year started out right.
I’m not sure how this is contracted — off of a website, certainly, but it really locks things down for anyone who has the misfortune of getting it.
You’ll know you have it when every google search you do takes you to somewhere other than where you intend to be going. The links in a search will route you through some go.google.com URL to deposit you onto some odd search page that will only lead to more trouble. This is someone making money off of their google ads account by forcing your traffic through it. Turns out it’s as nasty as it is clever. You won’t be able to download any remedies, and it will shut down your virus scanner, too. I think it manifests a little differently with each permutation, but likely this fix will apply if the behavior is similar. Nothing to lose, at any rate.
