I Don’t Get it. Why is this funny? I’m not upset by it. I just don’t “get the joke”. Santa in the Netherlands?
Please explain to my dumbness. I’m sorry. I’m not saying it’s not funny, I must have missed the joke.
This is funny on many levels! The humor is very wry, and impishly sarcastic without being overdone, and perversely philosophic.
I enjoyed the affected righteous indignation ridiculing the notion of American supremacy. The whole premise - an American finding another country’s Santa Clause myth absurd - is like arguing that Gandalf’s hat wouldn’t have survived his fight with the Balrog (it didn’t, actually, but I’m just illustrating a point here).
I find the whole thing kind of farcical, and it appeals to me. Yet, it’s enlightening and informative at the same time.
Maybe it’s highbrow bookish humor. I have an example of this:
I once saw a sign for a sandwich place that said “Hot Heros”, except the second H had fallen off [Hot Eros]. I thought it was really funny - so much so, that I still remember it 25 years later.
Another time, I saw where the “Public Hairdressers” sign had lost its ‘L’ [Pubic Hairdressers]. That was funny too.
These are essentially the same fundamental joke, but maybe the nerd quotient is higher on the first example. Maybe the Santa piece is that kind of humor. <shrug> I liked it

I don’t get it either.
What gives?

At least it’s more realistic than some fat dude circling the globe and climbing down chimneys.

And even though he may not still believe in Santa Claus, he still believes in Santa Claus.

Dave, thanks for explaining the humor to John. I wanted to, but just didn’t have the energy…
